HCII Research Lab

The HCII has two major goals: first, to create world-class computing technologies which serve the real needs of people; second, to teach others how to do the same. Creation of human-serving technologies requires both a deep understanding of computing technology -- hardware and software -- as well as an understanding of how people work, play, interact with each other, and learn.

The most exciting part of this Institute is the bringing together of CMU's world-class computing research tradition with internationally known researchers in the social sciences, business and design. I have long believed that true innovation occurs at the fringes of a discipline rather that at the center. At the fringes, concepts and ideas rub and spark against each other to create new approaches and new solutions. This opportunity to bring together these different academic cultures is what drew me to join the Institute.
