The aim of this symposium is to bring together researchers and developers from different communities who share the vision of human-centred computing support in virtually all situations of our everyday life. The symposium aims to focus on applied handheld and ubiquitous computing, and to study both handheld personal technologies and ubiquitous computing environments in the context of innovative applications. For the first symposium on this topic, the scope is defined by three themes:

• Handheld CSCW: innovative ways to support collaboration in groups and communities
• Interaction with Environments: applications that integrate everyday environments
• Information Appliances: innovative access to information and computing resources
